The Sendai Multicultural Center opened in June 2019. The center is a single point of contact for foreign residents living in Sendai.
The staff of the center is always on hand to provide consultation in English and Chinese. Once a week a Korean, Vietnamese, and Nepali foreign counselor is available. Consultation in 13 other languages is also accepted via a three-way interpreter.
2,689 clients used the service over the year. Although the service was mostly used by international students about 40% of the users were Japanese citizens.
Clients sought consultation about relocation, marriage, childbirth, medical examination of infants, and even things of a minor nature such as how to dispose of garbage. I can remember when I had doubts about how to get rid of the trash, don’t you?
At the end of the last fiscal year, there were 13,817 foreigners living in Sendai, Miyagi. This number represents 1% of the 1.09 million people living in Sendai. Therefore, the service is of growing importance as the number of foreigners living in Miyagi increases.
