Sendai, Miyagi’s capital city, is one of the most touristy places in Japan because it’s enriched with culture, traditions and welcomes all foreigners with warm hearts. Knowing the weather, no matter where you go, is probably the smartest thing one can do because we all know how the weather can affect our day.
Whether it’s going to a Sendai for business, vacation or just to meet up, knowing the weather will come in handy. We have created this monthly guide so you will be prepared for the weather in Sendai, Miyagi.
January leans to the colder side of the weather, so if you’re not one for the snow and chilly winds, it’s better to stay away. January is the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 2.2 °C (36 °F), with a minimum of -1.3 °C (29.7 °F) and a maximum of 5.6 °C (42.1 °F).
Tourism is usually slow in January because of how cold it is, but if you’re not one to fear the cold or belong to a pretty cold area as it is, you’re more than welcome to try out Sendai’s streets.
Similar to January, February in Sendai is freezing. From icy winds to black ice. Sendai winters can be harsh. The average temperature is of 2.7 °C (37 °F), with a minimum of -1.1 °C (30 °F) and a maximum of 6.5 °C (43.7 °F). So it’s best to avoid heading to Sendai if you’re a tourist. It doesn’t rain much; only around 6 days on average. If you’re going to be living there, keep yourself stocked with gloves, sweaters, big coats, and flasks of hot water!
Although really chilly, March brings out the lighter side of winter. The average temperature is about 5.7 °C (42 °F), with a minimum of 1.4 °C (34.5 °F) and a maximum of 10 °C (50 °F). If you are a lucky, you might see the first cherry blossoms in spring. If not, you should definitely start seeing the sun peek out of the clouds a little more, and the snow slows down. However, it will start raining a bit more frequently.
Grey clouds cover the sky as Sendai enters April, with rain falling on an average of 9-10 days. This is when the temperature touches the special double digits, and you get 10℃-18℃ on average. The sun gets friendly with the rain. The average temperature is of 10.9 °C (52 °F), with a minimum of 6.3 °C (43.3 °F) and a maximum of 15.5 °C (59.9 °F).
By this time, you should definitely be able to see cherry blossoms in Tsutsujigaoka Park and Nishi Park.
The average temperature in May is of 16.0 °C (61 °F), with a minimum of 11.7 °C (53.1 °F) and a maximum of 20.2 °C (68.4 °F). So, now we are getting to the warmth of the matter. Cherry blossoms should still be in bloom at the start of the month so it is the right mix and the perfect time to view this beautiful wonder.
The temperatures in June are pleasantly comfortable, that is because the average temperature is of 19.6 °C (67 °F), with a minimum of 16.1 °C (61 °F) and a maximum of 23.1 °C (73.6 °F).
The weather is wonderful, but places and events might get a little crowded. Tourism peaks in June and festivals are warming up for their yearly parade. Don’t be surprised if you experience rain as June is also the start of the rainy season (tsuyu (梅雨) in the Tohoku area of Japan.
July is a great example of why you should be careful of what you wish for. This is because the weather in Sendai can move from warm to hot and stifling. The average temperature is of 23.4 °C (74 °F), with a minimum of 20.2 °C (68.4 °F) and a maximum of 26.6 °C (79.9 °F).
Tsuyu is also in full swing at this point and having an umbrella on hand is a smart thing to do. But this is Sendai and regardless of the weather, the festivals will still be held so, head outside in shorts and summery clothes because you will have a good time.
August is the hottest month of the year. The hottest days can reach up to 34 °C (93.5 °F), yes, you read that correctly. Japan. August is also Tanabata and obon so you will definitely have a lot of things to do and see. But like July, the temperature can move from hot to stifling. However, if it is the hottest month, it means the temperature can only go down from here.
If you love rain, you’re going to adore September. If you don’t, well, here’s some unfortunate news. The rain happens around 9-10 days on average, but the downpour is extreme, which means September is the wettest month of the year; so, expect all the puddles and wet mud outside. However, the average temperature is 21.5 °C (71 °F), with a minimum of 18 °C (64.4 °F) and a maximum of 25 °C (77 °F).
Raining or not, you would miss out if you did not catch the Jozenji Street Jazz Festival, which is one of Sendai’s biggest annual events. It is usually in mid-September.
By now, you’ve surmised that Sendai is a rainy place, but that’s okay! October catches around 8-9 days on average, and the lowest can even be 4. The temperature stops soaring and remains in the double digits around15.8 °C (61 °F), with a minimum of 11.9 °C (53.4 °F) and a maximum of 19.8 °C (67.6 °F). so grab your sweaters because you will wear them. But don’t be surprised if you will have to take them off soon because it can still get a little warm this time of year.
In November, the sun occasionally gives you a glimpse, but otherwise, it’s pretty chilly. The temperature ranges between 5.6 °C (42.1 °F) and 14.1 °C (57.4 °F). These temperatures mean it is time to take out those winter coats that have been resting in the cupboards.
In December, the weather in Sendai is very cold. The average temperature is of 4.6 °C (40 °F), with a minimum of 0.9 °C (33.6 °F) and a maximum of 8.3 °C (46.9 °F).
On the coldest nights of the month, the temperature usually drops to around -3 °C (26.5 °F). However, this is also when Sendai starts to look like the town you’d spot in a cozy fairy tale book, with houses painted in white and lights twinkling at night. So, though cold, it could be a wonderful time for romance. After all, it is the most wonderful time of the year and it is hard to dispute this after seeing the annual Sendai Pageant of Starlight.
