Korea has a stable economy and enticing, culture. The world is embracing Korea, and they are also embracing the world. You can become one of the embraced if you move there to teach English. Yes, you can move to South Korea to teach English.
The best teaching positions in Korea offer round-trip flights, inclusive in the contracts. First-time, English teachers in South Korea working in public schools usually earn monthly salaries between US $1,150 – $2,650. English teachers at private schools US $1,600 – $2,000 monthly.
Sometimes subsidies are provided for accommodation and travel. Some teachers also get, placement bonuses.
If you have a bachelor’s degree, teaching experience and TEFL/TESOL certification, you can get some of the best teaching jobs in Korea. If you don’t meet all of the above requirements, there are other places you can work.
Of course, you should be a native English speaker, but some places require you to come from specific English-speaking countries (U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa). But don’t be deterred by this, there are many Caribbean nationals who teach English in Korea. Wherever you are from, they will still expect you to prove your English abilities.
After being selected, you will then have to decide if you want to teach in an urban area or in a rural area. So, do some research before you choose.
There are programs for public, private language schools (called Hagwon) and for private online tutors. The Korean government provides a lot of support if you get hired by them. If you are hired to teach in a public school, you will co-teach with Korean teachers and get longer vacations.
Private schools on average pay better, but their schedule is determined by the school. However, on like government positions that only hire twice a year, you can get a job at anytime during the year with a private school. If you are looking for flexibility, you could consider online classes where you can set your own hours/schedule and choose to teach adults or children.
The application process will differ from program to program, but the most common requirement amongst them is proof of citizenship, qualifications and/or English-speaking status. The Ministry of Education overseas postings to public schools in different provinces. However, you can and should inquire directly to see new job postings.
This is an English Program in Korea that is organized by the government through the Korean Ministry of Education. They oversee recruitment and placements for public schools. EPIK application process is competitive, but you can get to work in urban areas or in the rural areas.
In addition, if you want to teach in Seoul, there is a separate platform through which you must apply, -Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE Korea). However, it is very competitive because of the popularity of Seoul. There is also GEPIK (Gyeonggi-do English Speaking Program in Korea) which places teachers at Seoul’s satellite cities.
If you cannot get a job with the government, there is nothing to stop you from applying to Hagwons all-year-round. Following websites is a good place to start your search.
Finally, if these do not work, all is not lost. You can still get to teach English to Koreans; however, this will have to be online. But they are few because Korean students prefer in-person teachers. But with all the benefits and perks of teaching English in Korea and Koreans, we wish you all the best with getting hired.
